Dr Nilesh Mehta

Dr Mehta is a senior cardiologist and Director of Northside cardiology. He has been working at Northern Hospital for last 13 years as an interventional cardiologist.

Nilesh completed his basic medical and cardiology training at Mumbai University, India. He completed Interventional Cardiology fellowship from St Vincent’s Health and was awarded FRACP from Melbourne University in 2007.

Dr Mehta has special interests in complex coronary interventions- chronic total occlusion and Rotablator angioplasty for heavily calcified blockages. He also has keen interest in preventive cardiology, and echocardiography

Nilesh is actively involved in teaching and mentoring cardiology registrars and advanced trainees.

Nilesh enjoys running, surfing and competing in triathlons.

Dr David Russell

BMedSci (Hons), MBBS (Hons), FRACP

Dr Russell is a cardiologist specialising in multi-modality cardiac imaging. He completed his medical degree at the University of Tasmania, and his specialist training at the Royal Hobart Hospital and the Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

He has completed both a cardiac MRI fellowship (St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London), and an advanced echocardiology fellowship (St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne). He has held a staff specialist cardiology appointment at the Royal Hobart Hospital since June 2018, and is a senior clinical lecturer with the University of Tasmania.

Dr Russell is comfortable with all aspects of adult cardiology, and specialises in diagnosis and management of ischaemic heart disease, valvular abnormalities (with a special interest in aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation), and heart failure.

Dr. Catherine Liew
Non- Invasive Imaging, Heart Failure and General Cardiologist


Dr Catherine Liew graduated MBBS and BMedSc from The University of Melbourne, and received her FRACP following completion of her training in clinical Cardiology at the Geelong and Austin Hospitals.

Dr. Liew undertook cardiac subspecialty training in cardiac imaging following a non-invasive cardiac fellowship at Western Health where she trained in echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography.

Catherine Liew provides specialist services in general cardiology, heart failure management, valvular heart disease, echocardiography and stress echocardiography.

She is fluent in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Malay languages.

Dr. David Tong
General and Interventional Cardiologist


David graduated from the University of Melbourne and completed his cardiology specialist training in Melbourne. Following his PhD through the University of Melbourne, David undertook a post-doctoral interventional fellowship at the University of Newcastle/Freeman Hospital in England.

David’s interest is in all aspects of general cardiology including cardiovascular risk assessment, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, heart failure and valvular heart disease. He sub-specialises in performing coronary angiography, coronary stenting, intracoronary imaging and coronary physiology assessment.

David is actively involved in research. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at both national and international cardiology conferences.


Cardiac Technicians

Ling Laqui
Ling has an illustrious career as one of the most experienced cardiac technologists. She has been in this field for the last 25 years and has performed thousands of echocardiogram scans. She has been a member of the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry since 1993.

She started her basic cardiac training at Royal Melbourne Hospital and continued at Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. She has expertise in performing Transthoracic echocardiogram, Treadmill and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram.

Mala Rajah
Mala Rajah has over 30 years experience in all aspects of Cardiology. Her initial training was at Royal Melbourne Hospital and she completed her Diploma of Medical Ultrasound in 1991. Mala's special interest is Stress Echocardiography. She is a member of Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry and Australasian Sonographers Association.

Paul Lumley
Prior to his career in Cardiac Technology, Paul’s early working years involved project development and family & client support programs within disability services with a number of not-for-profit NGOs.

After commencing his training in Cardiac Technology in 2003 at Knox Private Hospital, Wantirna, Paul undertook his post-graduate studies in Cardiac Ultrasound at Queensland University of Technology in 2008, after which he has ejoyed practicing adult echocardiography in private practice, hospital settings as well as varied placements in regional Victoria.



Tracey Muir
Tracey has been a cardiac technologist for 32 years. 27 of those years doing echocardiography and stress echo . Tracey also has experience in cardiac cath lab, electro physiology, pacing, holters and research.
Tracey is enthusiastic, love the out doors and meeting new people.
